What is a Life Coach?
A Life Coach works similarly to a Health Coach, collaborating with clients to create realistic goals and guiding and supporting them to achieve these goals. Life coaches assist with facilitating real, tangible change to improve the outcome of someone’s life – they focus on where their clients are at right now and determine where they want to be in the future, bridging the gap and making their goals become a reality. Life coaches are not counsellors; nor are they trained to treat or diagnose. Their role is to work collaboratively with the client, working together as a team to create the life a client desires.

What does a Life Coach do?
Life coaches are adept at figuring out what their client’s strengths are, the obstacles and challenges they face, and uncovering what drives and motivates them. They work in the same way as a Health Coach, using specialised coaching skills and techniques, to champion and support clients to make positive changes and achieve their goals.
A Life Coach can assist clients with:
- Career progression and job satisfaction
- Achieving work-life balance
- Overcoming life challenges and problem solving
- Building strong relationships with others
- Fulfilling goals and improving quality of life
The main difference between a Life Coach and a Health Coach is that health coaches also support clients with health and wellbeing goals, as well as personal goals. Life coaches focus more on career development, financial goals and relationships (although health coaches also help create balance in these areas).
Both coaches can work online or in person, doing one-to-one coaching, group programmes or working with organisations.
Life Coach Career Opportunities
- Individual or group coaching
- Coaching within a corporate setting
- Career advisor or mentor
- Volunteering and community schemes
- Retreats and wellbeing projects
If you train to become Health Coach, you can extend your offering and support clients with their health and wellbeing goals.
Health Coaches can work within the NHS (in GP surgeries or hospitals), fitness centres, wellness retreats and spas, in private practice or in multidisciplinary clinics. There is a huge demand for health coaches in the corporate world as employers recognise the value of educating staff on how to improve their health and implementing wellbeing programmes for employees.
