An Ofqual-Regulated Level 5 Diploma in Health Coaching

Our Level 5 Diploma in Health Coaching is an Ofqual-regulated qualification, awarded by Gatehouse Awards and delivered exclusively by the College of Naturopathic Medicine. This is one of the very few nationally recognised qualifications of its kind in health and wellbeing coaching, and it places you on the regulated qualifications framework alongside other Level 5 awards in the UK.

That distinction matters. Health coaching is a voluntarily regulated industry in the UK, which means anyone can call themselves a coach. A regulated diploma in health coaching gives clients, employers and health professionals a clear signal that your training has been independently assessed against recognised professional standards.

We have been training practitioners in natural therapies since 1998, and our health coach training draws on decades of clinical teaching experience across nutrition, naturopathy, herbal medicine and complementary therapies. What you learn with us has been tested in practice, in clinic, over and over.

Why Study Health Coaching at Level 5?

Chronic disease, stress and obesity are at historic highs, and the health service alone cannot meet the demand for long-term behaviour change support. Doctors rarely have the time or the training to coach patients through diet and lifestyle change. That gap is exactly where a professional health coach works.

Health and wellness coaching sits at the meeting point of nutrition, movement, mental wellbeing and behaviour change. A skilled coach partners with clients to set realistic health and wellness goals, then supports them through the process of achieving those goals in a way that lasts.

Studying at Level 5 rather than taking a short weekend certificate means you graduate with genuine depth. Short courses simply cannot cover human nutrition, physical health guidelines, coaching models and business practice in any meaningful way. Our diploma runs to 740 hours precisely because competent, confident practice requires it.

Course Structure: 740 Hours Across Five Modules

The Level 5 Diploma in Health Coaching is a five-part programme. Each module builds on the one before, so you develop knowledge in the right order rather than learning coaching techniques before you understand the body you are coaching.

1. How the Body Works | 120 hours

You begin with anatomy, physiology and pathology. You learn how food is digested, how nutrients are absorbed and used, how the body systems interact, and how illness presents. Crucially, you also learn to recognise red flags and understand exactly when to refer a client to a GP or specialist practitioner. This is what separates a safe coach from an unsafe one.

2. Nutrition and Health | 120 hours

Here you build evidence based nutrition knowledge covering food composition, the role of diet in health and disease across different life stages, food combining, and how to support common health challenges through everyday eating. Students receive extensive recipes, meal templates and course materials to use directly in professional practice. Areas such as gut health, blood sugar regulation, women’s health and energy are covered in depth.

3. Fitness and Exercise | 100 hours

Optimum physical health is not possible without movement. This module covers simple, effective movement and exercise that supports pain, hormonal health, bone density, weight management, stress management, immune function and mood. Video demonstrations from industry professionals show you how to recommend appropriate activity in line with recognised physical health guidelines, whatever a client’s starting point.

4. Coaching Skills | 300 hours

This is the heart of the diploma. Knowledge alone changes nothing if clients do not act on it. You learn structured coaching models, powerful open questioning, active listening, motivational interviewing principles, goal setting and the practicalities of behaviour change. You will develop practical skills in taking a full health history, handling difficult conversations, building mental health awareness and trauma awareness, and knowing the limits of your scope.

Students practise on one another first, then coach real clients under supervision. Experienced tutors guide you through case assessments and real-life video coaching cases so your confidence grows steadily.

5. Business, Marketing and Promotion | 100 hours

You finish the diploma with a working business plan. This module covers defining your niche, attracting your ideal clients, the difference between marketing, promotion and advertising, making social media work commercially, pricing, and building multiple income streams from a wellness coaching business. There is a reason more than 80% of our graduates go on to practise.

No prerequisites or prior experience are required to enrol.

What Makes Us Different

Most alternatives focus on features. We focus on outcomes.

  • Dual NHS and private sector pathway – Many programmes prepare you for one career path. Ours prepares you for both. Health coaching roles are available in private and corporate sectors, and NHS health coaching roles are increasingly found in GP practices and primary care networks. You graduate ready for either.
  • Integrated emotional health and physical wellbeing approach – We don’t separate the mind from the body. Physical health management directly impacts emotional wellbeing. Our curriculum reflects what real coaching demands: working across the full spectrum of wellbeing.
  • Real client practice during training – Not after. During. Health and wellbeing coaches support self-management and lifestyle changes, and you start doing that work under supervision while you’re still a learner. This is how you build genuine confidence and competence..
  • Outcome-focused, not just knowledge-focused – We measure our success by your results: your readiness to coach, your ability to produce improving health related outcomes for the people you support. Wellbeing coaches support people in setting personalised goals and making sustainable behaviour change-and that’s exactly what you’ll be able to do when you finish.

If others offer complexity, we offer clarity. If others require previous experience in healthcare, we provide the health knowledge foundations you need regardless of your background. Ethical practice in coaching requires understanding professional boundaries, and we embed that understanding from day one.
