What makes this a holistic health coach certification

Plenty of certification programs teach coaching conversations and stop there. Ours does not, because a coaching script is not of much use if you cannot tell the difference between a client who needs better eating habits and a client who needs a GP referral.

Holistic health coaching means working with the whole person. Diet, sleep, movement, stress, relationships, work, home environment. These pull on each other constantly, and a coach who looks at only one of them keeps hitting the same wall with clients.

That is why the first thing you study here is the human body. From there you move into naturopathic nutrition, then fitness and movement, then the coaching skills that tie it all together. By the time you work with real people, you have a deep understanding of what sits underneath the symptoms they describe.

You also learn the limits of the role. A holistic health coach does not diagnose, prescribe or treat. What you do is spot the warning signs, refer when referral is needed, and give people the knowledge, tools and accountability to make healthy lifestyle changes that hold.

Your qualification: Ofqual Level 5 Diploma in Health Coaching

You graduate with a Level 5 Diploma in Health Coaching, an Ofqual-regulated qualification awarded by Gatehouse Awards. Getting our health coaching qualification onto the Ofqual register meant our curriculum, teaching methods, faculty and student support were all assessed in detail.

This matters more than it sounds. Health coaching in the UK is a voluntarily regulated industry, so anyone can print a health coach certificate. A regulated qualification is how clients, clinics and employers tell the difference.

Alongside Ofqual regulation, your certification is recognised by national bodies and one international association after another:

United Kingdom and Ireland

  • ASIC, a UK Government approved body
  • NHS Personalised Care Institute (PCI)
  • UK & International Health Coaches Association (UKIHCA)
  • Association of Naturopathic Practitioners (ANP)

International

  • International Institute for Complementary Therapists (IICT)
  • American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP), board certification
  • COMENSA, South Africa
  • KTNO, Netherlands
  • APENB, Spain
  • Italian Health Coach Association
  • KHDA, Dubai and the UAE
  • Recognition in Cyprus and Greece

Students from more than 120 countries have trained with us since we opened our first college in London in 1998.

What you study: 740 hours across five modules

The certification process is built as five modules, taken in order, so each one rests on the last.

How the Body Works: 120 hours

Anatomy, physiology and pathology. How food is digested, how nutrients are absorbed and used, how the body’s systems interact, and how to recognise when a client needs a specialist or a GP.

Nutrition and Health: 120 hours

The fundamentals of naturopathic nutrition. Food groups, food combining, what to avoid, and how to use food to support specific health concerns across different life stages. You leave with recipes, meal plans and client templates you will use in practice.

Fitness and Exercise: 100 hours

Simple exercises that influence pain, hormonal problems, osteoporosis, weight, stress, immunity and mood, with video guidance from industry professionals.

Coaching Skills: 300 hours

The core of the training. Goal setting, open questioning, active listening, taking a health history, managing difficult conversations, and the behavior change techniques that move a client from knowing what to do to actually doing it. You practise on each other first, then work through real-life video cases, then coach real clients under supervision. Most short courses skip this part entirely.

Business, Marketing and Promotion: 100 hours

How to build a coaching business that pays. Defining your niche, attracting ideal clients, pricing, social media, and the difference between marketing, promotion and advertising. You finish with a working business plan, which is a large part of why more than 80% of our graduates are in practice.

No prerequisites, no prior experience. We have students in their twenties and their sixties: career changers, parents returning to work, nurses, pharmacists, dentists and personal trainers.

What Makes Us Different

Most alternatives focus on features. We focus on outcomes.

  • Dual NHS and private sector pathway – Many programmes prepare you for one career path. Ours prepares you for both. Health coaching roles are available in private and corporate sectors, and NHS health coaching roles are increasingly found in GP practices and primary care networks. You graduate ready for either.
  • Integrated emotional health and physical wellbeing approach – We don’t separate the mind from the body. Physical health management directly impacts emotional wellbeing. Our curriculum reflects what real coaching demands: working across the full spectrum of wellbeing.
  • Real client practice during training – Not after. During. Health and wellbeing coaches support self-management and lifestyle changes, and you start doing that work under supervision while you’re still a learner. This is how you build genuine confidence and competence..
  • Outcome-focused, not just knowledge-focused – We measure our success by your results: your readiness to coach, your ability to produce improving health related outcomes for the people you support. Wellbeing coaches support people in setting personalised goals and making sustainable behaviour change-and that’s exactly what you’ll be able to do when you finish.

If others offer complexity, we offer clarity. If others require previous experience in healthcare, we provide the health knowledge foundations you need regardless of your background. Ethical practice in coaching requires understanding professional boundaries, and we embed that understanding from day one.

Proof That It Works

The evidence behind health coaching itself is equally compelling:

  • 85% of our graduates are working with clients using their skills
  • Meta-analytic evidence shows health coaching produces positive effects on physical activity, weight management, dietary behaviour, and quality of life
  • Research demonstrates a moderate effect size (~0.46) on wellbeing and resilience outcomes through coaching interventions
  • In the NHS “Looking After You Too” programme, 3,860 frontline staff received coaching, with coached participants showing significant gains in wellbeing and resilience versus non-coached peers

Study at your own pace, online or in London

The course runs part time and self paced, so you fit it around your life rather than the other way round. Most people qualify in six to twelve months.

Everything sits in our student portal: video lectures, notes, quizzes, case studies, recipes, sample client letters, current research and regular webinars. You have ongoing access throughout your studies, so you can pause, rewind and rewatch a lecture as often as you need. If something is not clicking, your tutor is an email away.

There is a student WhatsApp group too, which matters more than people expect. Comparing notes with other students and practising coaching sessions together is part of how the confidence gets built.

Prefer to learn in person? Our in class option runs at the London campus, ten minutes on foot from King’s Cross and St Pancras station.

What you will be able to do when you qualify

Through our health coach training you will be able to:

  • Identify the nutrients the body needs to thrive and understand how disease develops
  • Plan and evaluate individual health regimes for clients
  • Apply personalised nutrition and explain what a genuinely healthy diet involves
  • Help clients set and sustain wellness goals across every area of their life
  • Recommend the best foods and nutrients for optimum health
  • Support clients with lifestyle changes and exercise routines
  • Recognise red flags and refer clients on for additional support
  • Take a case with confidence and design plans that work
  • Define your market niche and attract your ideal clients
  • Build a client base through marketing strategies that hold up
  • Generate several revenue streams from one coaching business

Where a holistic health coaching career can take you

The health coaching industry is worth over one billion dollars a year and still growing, because the pressure on conventional health care is not easing. Doctors have neither the time nor the training to walk a patient through long term change. That gap is where you come in.

Our graduates go on to:

  • Run their own private practice, online or in person, one to one or in groups
  • Work in corporate wellness, cutting absenteeism and improving staff well being
  • Coach alongside GPs, natural therapists and other complementary therapists in clinics
  • Work in the NHS and other health care settings
  • Run group coaching programmes, workshops and retreats
  • Coach in gyms, spas and wellness centres
  • Write, speak publicly and build digital products

The appeal for most people is more freedom. You choose your hours, your clients and where you work from, and plenty of our graduates coach clients across several time zones from a laptop at home.

Once qualified you can join the CNM Business Club for ongoing business support. Continuing education runs year round through our webinars and short courses, because the best wellness professionals never stop training.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a qualification to work as a holistic health coach?

Practically, yes. Nobody will stop you trading without one, but clients, clinics and employers look for a recognised credential, and a weekend course gives you neither the knowledge to coach safely nor the business skills to find paying clients.

Is this an ICF accredited course?

No. The International Coach Federation accredits general coaching programmes. Our route is a Level 5 Diploma regulated by Ofqual and awarded by Gatehouse Awards, recognised by health-specific bodies including the NHS Personalised Care Institute, UKIHCA, ANP, IICT and the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. For holistic health and wellness coaching specifically, that is the stronger set of credentials.

How is this different from holistic life coaching?

There is real overlap, and much of the coaching skill set is shared. The difference is the clinical grounding. Most life coaches are not trained in physiology, nutrition or holistic medicine, so they cannot spot the physical drivers behind poor health, low mood or fatigue, and they cannot tell when to refer.

Can I study while working full time?

Yes. The course is part time and self paced, and our consultants will help you set a schedule around your commitments.

Will this improve my own health?

Almost always. Students routinely change their own eating habits, reduce stress and find better emotional balance while studying, and their families tend to come along for the ride.
