Fitness centers, yoga studios and wellness spas and retreats also contract health coaches to be part of their in-house team of health experts. Doctor surgeries are increasingly using the services of health coaches to assist the doctors and nurses in educating patients on diet and lifestyle. Doctors often don’t have the time or training to help their patients make the necessary changes to their diet and lifestyle, whereas health coaches do. Health coaches are helping to bridge the gap between patients and their clinicians.

Health Coach vs Nutritionist – What is the difference?

Health Coach vs Nutritionist – What is the difference?

Even though health coaches and nutritionists both help clients with their diet and lifestyle, their approach, depth of knowledge and areas of expertise vary greatly. The main difference being that a health coach works collaboratively with their clients, co-creating a health plan with their client, and coaching and supporting them to make the necessary changes. A nutritionist, on the other hand, works more prescriptively, giving their client a treatment plan to follow after taking a comprehensive case history.

Nutritionists have in-depth nutrition knowledge due to their extensive training; most nutritional therapy diplomas take three years to complete, including clinical practice. Nutritionists are trained to deal with nutritional deficiencies, manage nutrition-related health conditions and prescribe nutritional supplements where required. Nutritionists can also request and analyze blood tests and functional pathology tests.

Health coaches have basic nutrition knowledge and are only able to advise their clients on diet and lifestyle at a basic level; they are not able to prescribe nutritional supplements or carry out diagnostic testing. If a client has complex nutritional needs or a specific health condition, health coaches would be expected to refer their client onto a nutritionist or another healthcare professional.

In addition to supporting clients with diet, health coaches are also trained to assist with lifestyle factors such as stress, exercise, sleep and life goals. Health coaches are equipped with the necessary coaching skills and tools to be able to help their clients set and achieve realistic health goals. A health coach essentially works as a mentor, inspiring and motivating their clients to take control of their health. Health coaches can devise meal and exercise plans, while also supporting clients to achieve balance in their career, relationships and home environments. Health coaches use a tailored approach with each client, empowering their clients to create sustainable change in their lives.
