How to Become a Holistic Health Coach
Turn your passion for health and wellbeing into a career with purpose
More people than ever are looking for someone to help them make sense of their health. They are tired of quick fixes, conflicting advice and appointments that last ten minutes. They want someone who will look at the whole picture: their diet, their sleep, their stress levels, their movement and their mindset. That is exactly what holistic health coaches do, and it is why the health coaching profession is growing year on year.
If you have been wondering how to become a holistic health coach, this guide walks you through what the role involves, the qualifications you need, the skills that matter and the career options waiting for you once you qualify.
What is a holistic health coach?
A holistic health coach is a trained professional who supports clients in making long lasting changes to their diet, lifestyle and overall well being. Rather than focusing on one symptom in isolation, they take a holistic approach and consider how every part of a person’s life connects: their eating habits, their physical activity, their relationships, their career and their home environment.
The word holistic matters here. A client who comes to you about weight gain may actually be dealing with poor sleep, chronic stress or an unaddressed thyroid issue. Holistic health coaches are trained to spot these connections, ask better questions and work with the client to build a plan that addresses the root of the problem rather than the surface of it.
It is important to be clear about scope. A health coach does not diagnose, prescribe or treat. They do not replace a nutritional therapist, a naturopath or a GP. What they do is educate, motivate and empower clients to take responsibility for their own health, and refer on to a specialist when something falls outside their remit.
Why the demand for health and wellbeing coaches is rising
Chronic disease, stress and obesity are at record levels. Doctors within integrated care systems are stretched, and a standard consultation simply does not allow the time needed to coach someone through behaviour change over weeks and months. This gap is precisely where wellbeing coaches have found their place.
The NHS now employs health and wellbeing coaches to support patients with long term conditions, helping them understand nutrition, movement and self management. Multinational companies bring coaches in to reduce absenteeism and lift morale. Wellness centres, gyms, spas and multi-disciplinary clinics are all recruiting. Meanwhile, thousands of coaches run their own business online, working with paying clients from anywhere in the world.
The health coaching industry is now valued at over one billion dollars annually, and the opportunities show no sign of slowing.
How to become a holistic health coach? (step-by-step guide)
1. Decide whether the role suits you
Before you invest in training, be honest about whether the work appeals to you. Good coaches are patient listeners, natural encouragers and genuinely interested in other people. You do not need to be perfect, but you do need to care. Many health coaches come to the profession after resolving a health problem of their own, and that lived experience often becomes their greatest asset.
2. Choose an accredited course
This is the single most important decision you will make. Health coaching is voluntarily regulated in the UK, which means the standard of training on offer varies enormously. Weekend courses and short online certificates will not give you the depth you need to coach clients safely or confidently.
Look for a comprehensive diploma with recognised accreditation behind it. CNM’s Health Coach Diploma is an Ofqual regulated Level 5 qualification awarded by Gatehouse Awards, and it is accredited by leading associations across the UK, Europe and internationally, including the ANP, UKIHCA, IICT, the NHS Personalised Care Institute and COMENSA. That recognition matters when you approach employers, clinics or corporate clients.
3. Learn how the body works first
You cannot give sound guidance on holistic health if you do not understand physiology. This is why our course puts the module ‘How the Body Works’ at the very beginning. Students learn how food is digested, how nutrients are absorbed and used, and how the body’s systems influence one another. Just as importantly, they learn to recognise red flags and know exactly when to refer a client to a specialist.
4. Build your nutrition and fitness knowledge
Next comes naturopathic nutrition: which food groups support which functions, what to avoid, how to combine foods for energy and how to support specific health concerns through diet. Students receive recipes, meal plans and templates they can use with clients from day one.
The fitness module follows. Oxygen is the body’s most important nutrient, and optimum health is not possible without movement. You will learn simple, effective exercises that support pain management, hormonal balance, bone density, weight management, stress and mood, with video guidance from industry professionals.
5. Master the coaching skills
This is the heart of the training and the largest module on the course, at 300 hours. All the knowledge in the world counts for little if your client never acts on it. You will learn goal setting, open questioning, problem solving, how to take a health history and how to handle difficult conversations. Positive psychology principles underpin much of this work, alongside proven behaviour change techniques.
Students practise on each other first, then progress to coaching real clients under supervision. Practical exercises, case assessments and real life video coaching cases build your confidence step by step, which is why our graduates feel confident seeing clients from the moment they qualify.
6. Learn how to run your own business
A brilliant coach with no clients helps nobody. Our business module covers the difference between marketing, promotion and advertising, how to define your niche, how to attract your ideal client and how to make social media work for you. There are some fundamental truths that lead to success and some traps worth avoiding entirely. Students finish the course with a working business plan already in place. There is a reason more than 80% of CNM graduates go on to practise.
7. Qualify and keep learning
Certification is the beginning, not the end. The world of holistic wellness moves quickly, and the best coaches keep reading, keep training and keep refining their practice. Our graduates can join the CNM Business Club for ongoing business support.
What skills does a holistic health coach need?
- Active listening. Hearing what a client actually says, without judgement or interruption.
- Clear communication. Explaining complex ideas simply, and thinking before answering.
- A solution focus. Working with clients to find realistic ways forward, not just identifying problems.
- Energy and enthusiasm. You are the accountability partner who keeps people going when motivation dips.
- Holistic thinking. Understanding how diet, stress, sleep, relationships and career all feed into one another.
- Patience and flexibility. No two clients progress at the same speed, and no two days look the same.
Where a holistic health coaching qualification can take you
Career progression in this field is genuinely open ended. Our graduates work in private practice online and in person, deliver group coaching sessions, run corporate wellness programmes, work alongside GPs and natural therapists, specialise in areas such as women’s health, gut health or stress and burnout, run retreats, write books, speak publicly and create digital products. Many coaches combine several of these to build multiple income streams and sustainable careers.
Because you set your own schedule and can work from anywhere, this is a profession that fits around family life and personal commitments rather than dictating them.
